(AIHEC Support Available)The American Indian higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), in collaboration with the Alliance for Equity in Higher Education, is please to announce the “Model Institutions for Excellence National Conference.”  The goal of the conference is to disseminate important information on the MIE program to other minority serving institutions.  Conference highlights include sessions on accomplishments and lessons learned, including strategies for adapting best practices to the unique institutional context of Tribal Colleges and Universities.  Focus areas are student outcomes (including student retention), faculty development, and physical infrastructure development.  Through generous support from the National Science Foundation, the Alliance and AIHEC will reimburse participation costs for up to 24 Tribal College Presidents and STEM faculty.  For more information, call Al Kuslikis at (703) 838-0400 x121, email akuslikis@aihec.org, or Jean Foster at jfoster@aihec.org. 3rd Annual TCUP TSET Workshop

(AIHEC Support Available)AIHEC is pleased to co-host with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) an important workshop, “Contracting with NASA as a Minority Serving Institution.”   The workshop will be convened specifically for Tribal Colleges and Universities on July 7-8, 2005, at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland.  We are encouraging TCU business development, contracting, and sponsored programs staff to attend.  As always, we welcome and encourage presidents to attend, as well.AIHEC is pleased to offer to reimburse the travel costs of up to two participants per TCU.  Reimbursement includes airfare, two nights lodging, non-rental car local travel, and per diem (except for meals provided).  Information on the workshop, registration form and AIHEC’s travel guidelines have been sent to ALL TCU presidents.  You can request an information packet by calling or emailing  Carrie Billy or Al Kuslikis (703.838.0400 x114 or 121 or cbilly@aihec.org or akuslikis@aihec.org.)The workshop is designed to provide access to business opportunities with NASA.  The following will be addressed:  • Doing Business With NASA as a University Contractor• Forging Contract Teaming Agreements with Major Corporation• Obtaining Subcontracts through NASA’s Mentor Protégé Program• Partnering with Small Businesses for NASA ContractsTo date only 5 people have signed up.  PLEASE encourage your staff to attend!

During the past year, 182 collaborations representing over 2,000 organizations and agencies applied for the Kellogg entrepreneurship grant opportunity. Clearly, many rural areas see entrepreneurship development as an important tool in their economic development portfolio. In response to this outpouring of interest, the four Regional Rural Development Centers are working in concert with funders and others to learn more about what is working in relation to entrepreneurship in rural America and what possibilities exist if we could do more to support entrepreneurship. We ask you to join us in a listening session on what is working well and what needs to happen to make it work even better. Please join us on Tuesday, July 12 to share ideas and opportunities related to rural entrepreneurship in Indian County at United Tribes Technical College.

(AIHEC Support Available)The Fifteenth Annual Salish Kootenai Tribal College workshop will be held July 24-27th, 2005 in Pablo, Montana.  This workshop is for Tribal College Registrars, Institutional Researchers, Business and Financial Aid Officers to network with other Tribal College staff, learn about developments in higher education a chance to gain additional professional development and training.A special session will be held for Registrars and Institutional Researchers.  During the session, AIHEC will provide additional training on the American Indian Measures for Success (AIMS) Key Indicator Survey for AIMS-participating institutions.  AIMS-institutions will also receive their Annual Factbooks.  Additional training on the Integrated Post-secondary Data System (IPEDs) will be provided at the end of the week on July 28-29th.  AIHEC is pleased to announce that it will provide a travel stipend of $1500 per TCU for Registrars and Institutional Researchers to attend.  Details have been emailed and faxed to the Presidents, Registrars and Institutional Researchers.For more information, please contact Robyn Hiestand at AIHEC (rhiestand@aihec.org) or John Gritts of the American Indian College Fund (jgritts@collegefund.org).

This training is designed for the novice grant writer. It will cover the basics of grant writing including: a glossary of terms, effective terminology, outlining a proposal, developing a historical background and needs statement. It will also cover writing a plan of operation and measurable objectives. Participants will become familiar with grant publications and resources. Hands-on exercises will facilitate participants understanding.
Pre-register by: July 5, 2005
AIHEC will cover travel expenses for one representative from each tribal college and university. Please submit the pre-registration form as soon as possible.

The Society of American Indian Government Employees (SAIGE) is proud to sponsor its 2nd annual national training conference. One of the goals of the Society is to encourage Native American youth to realize their potential providing leadership in their community and schools, to continue their education in order to gain college degrees in the multitude of public service professions, and ultimately, to seek a career in the government sector.
The Youth Track is open to Native students who will be at least 18 years old by August 1, 2005, and are enrolled and in good standing at an accredited high school, college or university for the 2005-2006 school year.  Students must be interested in gaining a professional degree and in the possibility of pursing a career with the federal government.
